Night Trains And Sleepers

Go over night

Overnight trains are available on many of Europe's national and international city-to-city routes. Night trains let you add an extra vacation day to your trip. It's easy with a Eurail Pass.

Most overnight trains also offer sleeping accommodations, which vary quite a bit in type and price. Sleeping accommodations always require an additional fee if you are using a rail pass.

You can avoid the extra cost & complication

if you're willing to sleep in your seat, but it's important to note that not all overnight trains carry seating cars -- in these cases you must reserve accommodations in order to use the train at all. (Some trains carry seating cars only in Second Class, though you can always use these with a First Class pass.)

Types of Accommodations:

Couchette compartments consist of four to six narrow bunks and are public -- you will share the compartment with other travelers without regard to gender. Travelers are supplied with a pillow and blanket, but are expected to sleep in their street clothes. Although couchette compartments have traditionally come in both First and Second Class -- with the First Class version hosting fewer travelers per compartment -- the trend is towards offering couchettes in Second Class only. Holders of a ticket or railpass in either class are elegible for Couchette travel with payment of the required supplement.

T-4 Couchette	T-6 Couchette

Sleeper compartments contain one to three more comfortable beds and are usually private -- typically travelers select a compartment size to match the number of their traveling companions. (On some trains, two Sleepers with an adjoining door can be requested to create a family-sized room.) Sleepers have locking doors and for the most part offer the same level of privacy as a hotel room. They usually feature a washbasin with hot and cold water, and some of the more deluxe versions include their own toilet and even a shower. (WCs are found at each end of the car in the more typical configuration.) Some Double Sleepers include a very small third bunk suitable for a small child. Only holders of a FirstClass ticket or railpass are elegible to reserve a First Class Sleeper. Second Class Sleepers, where available, are open to holders of either class.

Single	Double	Triple

Sleeperette cars, which replace or augment the Second Class Sleepers and Couchettes. These are configured like regular seating cars but offer special seats which recline for a more comfortable overnight journey. They are presently found only on the new specialty trains, but as the Sleeperette car is much less expensive to operate, it is likely that we will see more of this type of thing in the future.


The Night Trains


Allegro

Italy - Austria - Czech Republic

Connecting Italy and Austria (Via Tarvisio) and the Czech Republic. 4 night trains are available on the route of Rome/Milan/Venice-Salzburg/Vienna-Prague. And 2 trains daily from Venice to Vienna.

Night accommodations include:

Eurail Passes are alowed on Allegro trains. Partial Pass fares will be required if your pass does not cover the entire journey. Seat reservations are mandatory.


Artesia de Nuit

France - Italy - Connecting France and Italy on the routes.

Paris - Florence - Rome Paris - Venice Paris Milan

Sleepers

Single. 1 berth cabin T2: 2 berth cabin T3: 3 berth cabin

Couchettes

T6: 6 berth cabin

The Artesia de Nuit departs daily from Paris. 7:30 pm and 10:30 pm. Arriving the day after. 1st Class sleeper passengers can enjoy the "Club Eurostar" service if they wish.

Berlin Night Express

Berlin - Malmo

Connecting Berlin with Scandinavia. Accommodations include:

Double compartments with with shower/WC. 6 bunk couchettes.

Eurail Pass Holders

Eurail Passes are alowed on the Berlin Night Express train and pay a reduced price for accommodations in a double sleeper (30 EUR) or couchette (15 EUR).


DB NachtZug

Germany And Selected Routes.

Berlin - Munich Berlin - Dortmund Hamburg - Munich Cologne - Copenhagen Munich - Copenhagen Hamburg/Berlin - Brussels - Paris Munich - Florence Dortmund/Frankfurt - Milan

The DB NachtZug also travels to Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, France.

Accommodations include:

Single or double sleepers with shower and toilet 4 or 6 bunk couchettes Sleeperette Resaurant and bistro car also available

Eurail Pass Holders

Eurail Passes are allowed on the DB NachtZug and pay a supplent for the overnight accommodation. 1st class passes are required for single sleepers.


CityNightLine

Germany - Austria - Switzerland - Netherlands

The CityNightLine is a double decker train running Germany - Austria - Switzerland - Netherlands.

Accommodations include:

Deluxe single or double compartments with wardrobe, table, toilet and shower. Economy 4 and 2 bed compartments with washing facility. 4 and 6 bunk couchettes. Sleeperettes.

Eurail Passes are allowed on the CityNightLine trains. An accommodation supplent applies.


Trenhotel Elipsos 1

France - Spain - Connecting France and Italy on the routes

Riviera Trains

Naples/Rome - Ventimiglia - Nice Milan/Venice - Ventimiglia - Nice

Riviera traind connect Italy with Nice France via Ventimiglia. Two night trains depart daily from Naples and Rome or Milan and Venice to Nice. Three day trains depart from Milan to Nice.

Seats in 2nd Class Single sleepers (1 birth) Double sleepers (2 birth) T-3 (3 birth couchette) T-6 (6 birth couchette)

Eurail Passes pay a reduced fare. Your Eurail Pass must be valid in Italy. France is not necessary. Reservations are mandatory.
