NSB also operates a number of local trains in a network around Norway’s major cities and suburbs designed to meet the transport needs of local commuters and tourists travelling by public transport.

NSB Regional trains

Taking a train between small towns and cities in Norway means travelling on NSB’s regional train network.

The regional network varies from the local network in a number of ways; the trains are larger and more comfortable, there are more services available on board, and regional trains do not make as many stops as local trains en route to destinations.

Holiday and leisure travel by rail.

A train journey allows you to sit back in comfort and enjoy the magnificent Norwegian scenery unfurling before you and then watch as it slips gently past the moving train. Travelling by rail is much less stressful and more exciting than just driving a car or taking a plane, and it’s easy to combine a train journey with a scheduled boat trip or stopping off somewhere for some outdoor pursuits. Kids also enjoy the actual journey as trains have a carriage with a play room specially designed for our younger passengers.

Optimal relaxation for commuters and business passengers.

A train journey will give you ample time to integrate your journey with a worthwhile pastime – whether travelling on business or commuting to work and back. Reserve a seat in NSB’s Komfort, the business class carriage on board. Komfort is equipped with the latest high-tech amenities and connections for working on board, or book a single sleeper for the journey and collect your thoughts in peace and quiet before arriving refreshed at your destination.

NSB Local trains (commuter trains)

The Norwegian State Railways operate a number of local train networks in Norway’s major cities and suburbs designed to meet the transport needs of local commuters and other passengers travelling by public transport. NSB’s local rail network fares are in most cases transferable when a journey is made in combination with other local public transport operators providing bus, tram, ferry and subway

services. In other words, single fares, monthly travel passes, travel discounts etc are valid for use to complete journeys within a local network. If you have just moved to a new city, or find yourself perhaps in an unfamiliar town on business or on holiday, or just travelling for leisure, call Travel information hotline on 177 for the best information available. When you call this hotline, you will always be put through to a local branch which will be able to give you the latest local travel information anywhere in Norway. NSB operates as part of the local public transport network in the Greater Oslo area and Eastern Norway, Stavanger, Bergen,Trondheim and Bodø.

Scenic Routes

The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Line (Bergensbanen) is a unique experience on Northern Europe´s highest railway. One of the greatest challenges for the Bergen railway is the harsh and changeable weather. The line is exposed to deep low pressure centres from the west, which can mean strong winds and heavy snow for part of the year. To be able to keep the railway open demands great effort and technical knowledge. Today, skilled workers, effective equipment, tunnels and snowtunnels make the Bergen railway one of the safest and most comfortable way of travelling between Oslo and Bergen. Bergensbanen is number one on a list of the finest railway journeys in the world.

The Flåm Railway (private railway, not part of the NSB company)

A train ride of about 50 minutes from Myrdal in the mountains down to Flåm by the fjord. The Flåm Railway is a masterpiece of railway engineering. Starting from the mountain station at Myrdal, this unique journey takes you down to the longest and deepest fjord in Europe - the Sognefjord. The 20km-long track offers just about everything: wild and beautiful mountain scenery, rich heritage landscapes and historical traditions. 80% of the Flåm railway has a gradient of 55 0/00. Some of the 20 tunnels are constructed as loops, which wind in and out  of the mountains, one of the most daring and skillful engineering feats of Norwegian railways. All carriages are equipped with five different brakes, each of which can stop the entire train.

The Dovre Line

The railway line between Oslo and Trondheim through the Gudbrandsdal valley is called the Dovre Line. The line passes mostly along the historic travel route between eastern and central Norway through the Gudbrandsdalen valley via the Olympic city of Lillehammer. This is the same route that pilgrims followed on their pilgrimages to Trondheim and Saint Olav´s shrine in the Middle Ages. The line ends up in Trondheim, Norway´s third largest city.

Lillehammer

After a train journey of about 2 1/2 hours the train passes Lillehammer, host of the XVII Olympic Wintergames in February 1994, where this idyllic village produced one of the best games ever. Lillehammer is rich with historical traditions and heritages from Sigrid Undset, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Anders Sandvig The outdoor museum Maihaugen with a selection of old buildings is worth a visit. The pedestrian main street Storgata has received a national architecture prize.

Trondheim

The Dovre Line ends in Trondheim, which is Norway`s third largest city. Trondheim was founded by Olav Tryggvason in 997, and in the Middle Ages pilgrims followed their pilgrimages to Trondheim and Saint Olav's shrine where Nidarosdomen cathedral is the historical relic remaining today. Trondheim is also famous for being the technology capital of Norway as well as for its university and its summer and winter sporting facilities.

The Rauma Line

A train ride from Dombås to Åndalsnes on the coast. Starting from Dombås (between Oslo and Trondheim) or Åndalsnes, the train takes you through picturesque mountains, over imposing bridges and through tunnels that turn through 180 degrees. On the way down to the bottom of the Romsdal valley, the mountains become higher and wilder, with waterfalls full of glacial water cascading in gushing torrents down the mountain sides. The train passes the tallest rock face in Europe, the Trollveggen, which towers 1,000m (3,281 feet) above the track. The line terminates at Åndalsnes - the alpine town by the fjord. There is a connecting bus service between Åndalsnes and Kristiansund, Ålesund or Molde, from where you can continue your journey on the Coastal Voyage (Hurtigruten).

Molde

The city of roses welcomes you, surrounded by a backdrop of 87 snow-capped peaks, a breath taking nature in a pleasant climate. Molde is known as a cultural city and for its annual

Ålesund

Welcome to the art nouveau town! Ålesund has an international reputation for its colourful and romantic architecture in the Art Nouveau style (Jugend- stil). The coastal town of Ålesund, with a population of 38,000, is the commercial and industrial capital of the Møre and Romsdal district. Ålesund has one of the largest export harbours in the world for "klippfisk", i.e. split, dried and salted cod, and a bustling, picturesque fishing port along the old harbour Brosundet" with Skansegata where you can buy fresh fish and prawns.

The Northern Line

The Northern Line between Trondheim and Bodø is one of the few railways in the world to cross the Arctic Circle. The line takes you through a variety of landscapes: farmland, dense forests, snow-capped mountains, marshes, fjords, rivers and lakes. North of the Arctic Circle, you are in the land of the Midnight Sun. This is a good reason in summer for choosing a comfortable and inexpensive sleeperette on the night train. For others the fascinating landscape makes them travel during the day to be able to fully enjoy the nature or keeps them up all night admiring the changing landscape and the special light.

The Southern Line

The Southern Line goes between Oslo via Kristiansand to Stavanger. Buses connect train stations to charming towns and villages along the south coast, an Eldorado for both sailing and sunbathing. The end station in the west is Stavanger, Norway´s international oil capital, a harbour city with a charming old town centre and several pubs and restaurants. Langesund, Kragerø, Risør, Arendal and Kristiansand are names which conjure up images in the minds of Norwegians of white-boarded ship captains' houses and billowing.
