Highlights: The Bergen Railway - crossing "the roof of Norway" |
The Bergen Railway is a unique experience on Northern Europe´s highest railway. The 471-km rail link between Oslo in the east and Bergen in the west is a dramatically beautiful train journey. At a height of 1.222 m Finse is the highest station. Myrdal station, at 866 meters, is the start/end of the Flåm Railway where the Flåm valley plunges down towards the Aurlandsfjord. This line is exposed to harsh weather and wind, which is one of the greatest challenges. The Bergen railway was recognized to be one of the 20 best railway experiences in the world in 1999. |
The Flåm Railway - a masterpiece of engineering. The journey on the Flåm railway line is one of the highlights of the trip. It is fascinating to be on the train as it glides through tunnels and open stretches on its way down the wild Flåm valley from mountain to fjord in just 20 km! You have a view of an ever-changing panorama of huge mountains and thundering waterfalls. |
Fjordcruise on the Nærøyfjord – included on the World Heritage List! The most beautiful experience on a Norwegian fjord down in idyllic Flåm, it's time to eat and wander around a bit before continuing the trip by boat on the Aurlandsfjord and into the Nærøyfjord, one of the narrowest fjord inlets in Western Norway, surrounded by mountains up to 1,800m high. This fjord inlet of the Sognefjord is both beautiful and charming. Small west-country farms lie dotted along the mountainsides and you can often see goats grazing along the edge of the fjord. If you are lucky, you will also see seals lying on the smooth rocks along the shore. |
Stalheimskleivane hairpin bends (in Summer only, May 1 - )The ship docks at beautiful Gudvangen. The next stage of the trip is the bus journey up the 13 steep, spectacular Stalheimskleivane hairpin bends, with views of the Stalheim and Sivle waterfalls, to the Stalheim hotel. After a brief stop here to enjoy the view, the journey continues to Voss followed by a relaxing train trip back to Bergen or Oslo. |
