Rail Pass Tips

Take advantage of what the railpasses have to offer

Eurail or BritRail Passes are the prefered way to travel Europe and the UK. Simply put, a rail pass will save you money! You're on your vacation of a lifetime so of course you want to maximize your rail pass to the fullest.

Below are few ways you can utilize your rail pass and get that bang for your buck in addition to the savings and convenience that the Eurail Passes will bring to you in your everyday travels around Europe.

Use the Eurail Pass bonuses

Not only are the Eurail Passes economical and convenient, they even come with many great money saving bonuses. It's wise to utilize these at anytime you can. Saving you even more.

The Eurail Passes offer great discounts on ferries, scenic rail lines, river steamers. And more.

For example:

  • 30% reduction on normal fares for P&O ferry crossings from Calais to Dover.
  • 50% reduction on normal fares for SeaFrance ferry crossings from Calais to Dover.
  • 50% reduction on normal fares for Irish Ferries crossing from Cherbourg and Roscoff to Rosslare (Ireland).
  • 50% reduction on boast day trips operated between Passau and Linz or vice versa by "Wurm & Kock"

This is just to name a few. But many travelers aren't aware of these bonuses. We reccommend that you take advantage of these bonuses if it makes sense. View the complete list of Eurail Pass bonuses.

BritRail Passes also offer great discounts such as 20% discounts for youths. 15% discounts for seniors. And the ultimate discount for families where one child travels free with one adult or senior.

Take advantage of the 7pm overnight rule

There may be times during your holiday where you may consider purchasing a sleeper or couchette to avoid pricey hotel accommodations.

If you are doing so, you may want to keep in mind the 7pm rule for overnight rail travel.

Simply put. If you are traveling on an overnight train and you board after 7pm, when you arrive you will only have used one day of rail travel rather than two. The travel between 7pm and midnight is exempt.

So schedule your overnight journey's with this in mind and save that rail travel for when it really counts.

Open your wallet for those small trips

Like alot of us, we tend to change our plans from time to time once we get intoxicated with our surroundings. You may decide to take some short excursions along the way. This is natural.

However, we reccommend that you open your wallet for these short journey's.

For example: A 5 country Eurail Select pass can cost about $70 per travel day. If your side trip is much cheaper than that, pay out of pocket. This will save you a rail day for that longer journey coming up.

Buy one railpass, not two
Eurail Saver Passes are a great money saver for those who are traveling with two to five people.

A saver Pass is one pass with the names of two to five travelers. The more people there are in your group, the more you save.

Travelers must be together at all times. However, if one traveler wishes to stay behind, the others may still travel with that pass. Find out more the Eurail Saver Pass and Eurail Saver Flexipass.
