Using a Eurail or BritRail Pass

How to use your Eurail or BritRail Pass

Your Eurail Global or BritRail pass is a computerized ticket with a serious of boxes for dates of travel, names etc. Your rail pass will come in its own ticket jacket similar to an airline ticket. Always keep your Eurail or BritRail pass in a safe and secure place.

As mentioned in the "Validating Your Eurail or BritRail Pass " section, the traveler fixes the first day of validity. You can do this after your arrival in Europe. Never enter the first or or last day of your Eurail pass by yourself. This must be done by a railway official.

You should never begin traveling before the first day of travel. And your rail pass must always be completed by midnight of the last day of validity.

If your first trip begins in a non-Eurail country, your rail pass can be validated on the train (i.e. when traveling from Poland to Germany)

Travel with a Eurail or BritRail consecutive pass
You will not need to enter any dates of travel to your Eurail Global Consecutive pass or BritRail Consecutive Pass. The expiration date will be checked by the conductor.
Travel with a Eurail Flexipass or Eurail Select pass.

Always make sure that the dates are entered in the correct way. The date of use must be entered in blue/black ink in the boxed calander on the bottom left corner of your pass before boarding your train.

On your Eurail Global flexipass, you’ll see a string of blank boxes, one for each travel day available to you. You can take as many trips as you like within each travel day.

Before boarding the train (or bus or boat covered 100% by your pass), fill in that day’s date in ink in one of the blank boxes on your pass.

Your Eurail Global pass is valid from midnight to midnight.

If you are taking an overnight trip after 7pm, you must write the next days date in the corresponding box of the calendar. Travel between 7pm and midnight on the day of the departure is then included.

Travel with a Eurail Saverpass

Although the rules state that all travelers must be traveling together, this does not mean a traveler on the Eurail Saverpass can't travel by themselves.

They may do so. However, he/she must carry the ticket and control voucher with them. Therefore the other members of the party cannot make another trip at the same time.

If a member of your party wishes to make a seperate journey from the rest, the whole party will lose atleast a rail day.

Travel in 1st Class with a 2nd Class Eurail or BritRail pass

If you want to travel in 1st class with a second class rail pass, you must pay the difference of the 1st and 2nd class point to point ticket cost of the route you are taking. You will be able to negotiate this at the ticket window.

If you wish to travel in 2nd class with a 1st class rail pass, no refunds will be given.

Special Trains
If you are a holder of A Eurail Pass, you will not have to pay the supplement cost to board the EC, IC, ICE or TGV trains. However, compulsory reservations may apply.
Transiting through another country
If you are transiting through another country that is not covered by your Eurail pass, an additional ticket must be purchased.
Penalties

Train staff are instructed to take your rail pass away if:

  • Your pass is not validated.
  • Your pass has been tampered with.
  • Using another persons pass.
  • Cannot produce a passport.
  • An attemp to use the pass beyond its validity point.
  • Entering dates in pencil.
  • Correcting dates that have already been entered.
  • Traveling on a pass where dates have not been entered.

If any of these situations occur, you will be asked to pay the full fare plus a fine which can range from 50 Euros to 100 Euros.

Bonuses

As a Eurail or BritRail pass holder, you are entitled to various bonuses for free or reduced transportation on certain shipping lines etc. A complete list of Eurail Pass bonuses can be found here. You will find bonuses to other rail passes on their respective pages.

Bonuses can only be obtained in Europe from the respective companies websites or call centers. A complete list of contact information will be sent to you along with your Eurail Pass.

Important note

Eurail passes may not be issued to residents of Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States (the former Soviet Union), Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, or Tunisia.

BritRail Passes may not be issued to residents of the UK.

So there you have it. It's quite simple. Enjoy your Eurail or BritRail holiday!
